The days are getting cooler, and what better way to embrace it than snuggling into your favorite cashmere pieces? Nothing keeps you warmer, is as versatile, stylish, and still provides that special feeling of luxury. With the right "know-how", you can also take wonderful care of cashmere and keep your favorite items looking as good as new for years. We reveal our tips & tricks for perfect care and inspire you with the highlights of the current season.
First things first – cashmere is a natural fiber that is breathable and therefore does not absorb odors as quickly. Especially when not worn directly on the skin, cashmere sweaters and cardigans do not need to be washed too often. Often you can simply air out your cashmere items.
Wash yourself, or send to the dry cleaner?
Almost all cashmere can be washed yourself. We only recommend sending very elaborate pieces such as thick cardigans and hand-knits to a special dry cleaner. Since these items are often not worn directly on the skin, this is only necessary when needed.
How do I wash cashmere correctly?
Cashmere gets damaged when the fibers "felt". Felt is known to be created by water, soap, and friction. For this reason, we advise against hand washing cashmere. Too much friction can quickly occur, and the cashmere often lies in the water for too long. It is much better to wash cashmere easily in the washing machine using the wool/cashmere program. It is important that the temperature is set to a maximum of 30 degrees Celsius and that it is not spun. To ensure that no threads are pulled during washing, it is worthwhile to protect individual pieces in a laundry net.
It is best to use a special detergent for cashmere or wool. Such products are often also called "conditioners" because they specifically care for cashmere wool and keep it soft. Make sure not to add too much detergent to the wash cycle, as this can lead to felting, as mentioned. Caution: please do not use fabric softener, as it penetrates the fibers.
How do I dry my cashmere laundry?
We recommend that you remove your cashmere laundry directly from the machine after washing and do not leave it damp for too long. Then smooth the cashmere and lay it flat on a drying rack. For stability, you can place a terry towel underneath. We advise against hanging the laundry, as the shape can distort.
Why does cashmere pill?
Cashmere pills mainly in areas where there is a lot of friction. Small fibers come loose and form small balls. High-quality cashmere pills less because care is taken to use mainly long fibers that are less likely to come loose. A new piece can still pill a little. After the first fuzz has been removed, this usually decreases.
How can I remove fuzz gently?
To remove fuzz, we recommend a "cashmere comb" or a lint shaver. Especially with coarse fibers, however, you have to be careful not to pull threads or create holes. You are welcome to drop off your cashmere items purchased from us at our atelier, and we will ensure that the fuzz is gently removed and your favorites look as good as new again.
We wish you a good start to the cashmere season and lots of fun applying these care tips!
